The Peak District Region & Ford

The Staffordshire Moorlands are the real ‘hidden gem’ of the Peak District National Park, very un spoilt & less busy than other areas. We are in the white peak area which includes the fabulous Manifold Valley.

The National Park covers an area of 555 square miles & has a population of 38,000, most of it’s area is pastureland & includes 80 square miles of open country or access land.

On our ‘doorstep’ is the world famous Alton Towers Theme Park which is only 8 miles away, a 10 minute drive by car. Don’t worry, if you are not here for the theme park you wouldn’t know it was that close, we are not impacted by the traffic to Alton Towers.

The white peak, an undulating limestone plateau of high pastureland, scattered villages, hamlets & beautiful river valleys, is girdled in a horseshoe shape by the far larger dark peak.

We are surrounded by fabulous moors & valleys, with views on the top of the moor across in the distance to the mountains of Wales.

The Churnet valley steam railway has been lovingly restored for the visitor to enjoy as in days gone by. The grandeur of Chatsworth House, the simplicity of Haddon Hall & the uniqueness of Sudbury hall are just some of the stately homes dotted across this very diverse landscape.

Ford itself was originally a quaker village when the quakers were being persecuted, it was the ideal place to retreat from society & live their simple lifestyle in an uninterrupted way, they could simply be ‘forgotten about’. The old ford has been replaced by a stone humped back bridge over the river Hamps, so no need to attempt the water with the car anymore, however, there are plenty of fords around the area should you wish to have a go! There is a unique cobbled stone ford in the next village at Butterton.

There are 12 properties dotted across this secluded hamlet, with dairy & sheep farming being the main employment in the area, with many families passing down the farm through the generations. The rest of the properties are lived in by families who enjoy the quieter lifestyle, off the beaten track, yet still very close to all amenities & travel infrastructure, we have the very best of both worlds here.
